This is something that doesn’t seem to be discussed that much. I assume golf would be the biggest candidate to do away with. I would also consider horse racing. Generally, sports that exploit the most (their existence necessitating exploitation) would make sense, whether it be people, animals, or resources.
I agree heavily with ending sports with animals, especially the ones used by the elite. Polo, Camel Racing, Fox Hunting, and Falconry. All used to flex wealth by spending shitloads on equipment and training.
Based. Ban horse racing and greyhound racing too. Those are disgusting exploitative.
Falconry isn’t necessarily a sport, lot of societies use falcons for hunting food, like in Mongolia
Participation of children in international competitions. We really shouldn’t be having children get physically burned out before the age of 20.
Lol Xi is reading the comments everyone 🤣
If the courses can’t sustainably use the land then Xi presses his red button. I love it. We don’t get that environmental respect in the west.
mini golf can stay tho
Only if we get to keep the fake grass and cute windmills :)
I’m torn on whether golf or US football is worse. Golf wastes a ton of land and removes it from beneficial use, but US football destroys the bodies and minds of its players ( and the thousands of usually poorer kids pipelined into it ) in an orgy of violence and jingoism; it’s the modern incarnation of the gladiator arena in nearly every way.
I’ve not got a massive issue with municipal golf courses that are free to the public, no bourgeoisie clubhouse and work to maintain a balanced relationship with the ecosystem around them.
This however doesn’t currently exist in the west so fuck golf.
Yeah, this. There’s nothing inherently wrong with golf itself, it’s just the culture attached to it.
Even the ‘land use’ contention: many of those are resolved when the land ceases to bethe exclusive purview of the wealthy. And it’s dystopian to imagine that in a communist society land would be wasted if it’s not put to something useful. Obviously remove golf courses from land that’s needed for something else or that should be a biodiversity nature reserve, but there are so many good ways we could do golf courses. And the few ideas rattling around my head will seem pithy compared to what designers could come up with in a post-revolutionary society.
Agreed. As far as sports go golf needs a lot of land which if the land is needed then sure golf gets put on the back burner but I’d like to think as you say in a post revolutionary society we’d have to ability to do all these things and more.
Animal based and resource wasting sports gotta go.
I would be fine with high impact sports if it didnt require children to make the best athletes for it.
Something about banging kids heads for football seems… Fucked
American football has got to go. Too many people get permanent brain damage from it and there’s really no way to fix that. Although it seems like most Americans will have permanent brain damage from Covid reinfections soon enough anyway, so maybe American football isn’t the biggest deal.
Golf is a no brainer. Golf courses should only exist on land that’s totally useless for anything else.
yeesh about long covid- it’s so sad… and will have long term economic consequences as well.
And agree with football - the numbers show that it is actually already declining. People do care about the health of their children wrt brain damage. I actually know a significant number of jock, football loving types who feel guilty for watching the sport now and will not permit their kids to play (one of them played D1 in college so this is not just a flash in the pan imo).
An obliquely related topic is the way in which the masses are constantly portrayed in media as having no empathy for victims of violence and that bloodsports were always popular with the masses. This is of course an overly-monolithic portrayal and in many cases is propaganda designed to encourage the proletariat to dehumanize themselves and instill a sort of self-hating proletariat mindset. The portrayals of the crowds at gladiatorial contests or public executions being bloodthirsty while the elites are disgusted (think gladiator, or braveheart) is often the inverse of the what the records show. Tightrope walkers in the mid 19th century were constantly being told “don’t try it” with crowd members looking away while the records show the local elite were jeering and cheering. The Romans hated Pompey for the gladiatorial games he threw where elephants were killed as they all felt sympathy for the elephants. And I think now we are experiencing a similar manifestation wrt football. People are not so willing to let people die for their entertainment as the elite. In fact it is the elite who have always sponsored, endorsed, and attended blood sports. look at the owner’s boxes at football stadiums today or at the price of Superbowl tickets.
And for public executions there are a lot of records of the common people crying at executions.
Cuban baseball shows that sports don’t have to be exploitive nor have billionaire owners to be popular.
Sports that involve animals should be banned. Other than that, none I think. It’s mostly the culture surrounding sports that is toxic. Kicking a ball around is fun. Watching people kicking a ball around is fun. But these people should not be billionaires because of it. Golf is fun, but having to be rich to play golf isn’t.
Banning sports is not the way imo.
There are not many sports I can think of that I would ban but I feel a sports centred culture reinforces the whole capitalism “competition is good” thing. We are left with the idea that the only fun in a sport or game is to win. This is ridiculous, no wonder obesity is rife in the west. There is no need to make everything so cut throat when only %0.001 of people are going to get anywhere with it professionally anyway. People can’t seem to just relax and enjoy it.
Sports that use massive ammounts of land and resources and create toxic teams around it. Football sucks and i will die on this hill, its an waste of land and creates some of the most obnoxious and toxic fanbases to ever exist, i speak this by self experience. Fuck FIFA.
The so called “professional” side of sports is the main culprit. Football easily unites people more than it divides them. It is the racism, oil money, human barter, and such stuff that mess it up. Go to any village in most places and you will find a football game. Easy to organize and adapts to space (you do not need a stadium to enjoy a game).
I second this, i dont hate football as an sport, i actually like it a lot, but the “professional” side of it is awfull.
Speak of the devil… China closes 111 golf courses and discourages party members from playing to conserve water and land
Yes, that’s partly what inspired me to make this thread haha
I suspected as much when I saw this post. I sent it to my demsoc mom and she is beginning to re-evaluate her stance on China. Having lived in Southern California for years the water waste always disgusted her. Especially when it has such a detrimental impact on Mexico.
I feel like it’s more important to regulate the appearance of sports in the mass media, then to actually ban the practice of a sport. As mentioned by others, sports that exploit animals should be banned in general imo, but for other sports, even violent ones like amerikkkan football or boxing, in my opinion there is no problem with people practicing those sports in their freetime. What I consider problematic is that the media treats people who are good in a sport like heroes even though they have literally accomplished nothing for society. I would rather recommend to stop broadcasting sports and let the people practice the sports as they please.
In addition sports that tend to use a lot of resources/land should be regulated. For example a golf course should never take up space that could be used for housing or food production. However, if people want to play golf in some uninhabited area with infertile soil that currently has no use anyways I don’t see a problem with that.
In conclusion, my opinion is that sports are rarely the issue and instead the culture focused around them is what makes up the problem. I think that it’s possible to change the culture for the better through regulations imposed on the media, without actually having to ban a sport, in almost all cases.
American football, because US degeneracy. Also cricket, because I don’t get it and fuck Bri*ish posh as fuckin aristocratic sports.
Cricket should be allowed to stay solely for the reason that its one of the few sports where we can watch the UK get its ass handed to it by all its former colonies.
Fair, that’s based af. Cricket can stay
Was just about to post US football. Literally a human meat grinder starting kids from elementary school, slamming their heads together repeatedly until everyone gets concussions and permanent injuries somewhere down the line.
Isn’t cricket popular in South Asia? (Because, brits) Is it a posh sport over there too?
It isn’t. It’s actually the sport of the common people there
Insanely popular eg in India and Pakistan. Don’t think it’s actually posh, I was mostly just joking. I just loathe watching it and my brain for some reason lumps polo and cricket together lol
I second the removal of cricket. It’s jarg colonial bs.
Aside from that, I don’t think we should ban any physical activity (although that doesn’t mean that sports should be a substitute for labour that benefits society, as under capitalism)
I’m surprised no one has mentioned auto racing. I would certainly consider it, especially F1. Uses a lot of land just like golf, and there isn’t even greenery. Just tarmac. Plus the cars use a lot of gas and oil from what I understand. I mean, F1 races go on for like 100 laps I think?
Usually around 50ish depending on the track. But I think that overall there have been efforts to reduce the environmental impact. Of course, nowhere near enough. Formula E for example is raced using fully electric cars, and its picking up traction, but the main F1 series is probably not switching to electric in our lifetimes.
